Low voter turnout for three contested races

Only about 14 percent of registered voters in Braintree participated in Tuesday’s local election, which had only three contested races, of of them between two write-in candidates.

Timothy Carey ran a successful sticker campaign for the open District 6 councilor seat, defeating write-in candidate Gerald DeGregorio, 411 to 353. The incumbent, Dan Clifford, decided not to run after the deadline for getting on the ballot.

The open District 2 councilor position went to Thomas Whalen, whose 432 votes bested Alan Burrell Jr.’s 230 and Michael Moran’s 192.

Five candidates ran for four seats on the Board of Library Trustees.

The winners were incumbents Jeffrey Kunz (2,394 votes) and Edith Weinberg (2,291); and challengers Annette McLaughlin (2,500) and Margaret Ann Morton (2,222). Jessica Mary Voloudakis was unsuccessful with 2,054 votes.
