Easton will hold a special election on Jan. 20 to fill the selectman seat vacated when the board chairman, Daniel Murphy, abruptly resigned in mid-October.
Candidates have until Nov. 30 to pull nomination papers for the position, which runs through the April 2018 election. As of last week, one candidate had taken out papers: Finance Committee member Thomas Brussard, who was elected this past spring.
“While I have enjoyed serving on the Finance Committee, I realized I can have a broader, positive impact on our community as a selectman,” he said in an e-mail. “My goal is to work respectfully and collaboratively with every member of the board toward supporting our town to the best of my ability.”
In her letter to candidates, Town Clerk Danielle Sicard quotes President Theodore Roosevelt on the daring nobility of entering the public arena and congratulated them for their “courageous step.” Candidates have until Dec. 2 to return papers.
Murphy resigned from the five-member board on Oct. 18, citing personal reasons and denying that the decision had anything to do with a Brockton Enterprise story that he owed “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in back taxes and court judgments.
Murphy sent his resignation from Disney World, where his family was on a “make-a-wish” trip for his 7-year-old daughter, who is being treated for kidney cancer.Johanna Seltz can be reached at email@example.com.
