Town celebrates holiday season with tree lighting

Pembroke residents are invited to join in a community celebration of the holiday season on Dec. 3, when the annual Pembroke Tree Lighting will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on the Town Green on Route 14.

The celebration, open to all, will include such family activities as marshamallow roasting, ornament and cookie decorating, hayrides, a moon bounce, face painting, children’s games, a “touch-a-truck” event, holiday music, and roaming holiday characters.

The highlight will be the arrival of Santa Claus on a fire truck at 5 p.m. to flick the “magic switch” lighting the tree. Following the lighting, Santa will meet with children and the Pembroke High School choir and band will perform holiday music.

Three students -- one from each of the town’s three elementary schools and previously selected in a random drawing -- will ride with Santa on the fire truck to the event.

Also as part of the day, the Pembroke Military Support Group will hold a ceremony at 3 p.m. in which the names of town residents serving in the military will be read and yellow ribbons placed on Pembroke’s Veteran’s Tree in their honor.

The ceremony is organized by a committee of community volunteers. For more information, go to
