Meeting to decide plan for town hall

Cohasset Town Meeting will decide in December whether to move forward with plans to renovate and add on to the town hall.

The warrant for the Dec. 4 special Town Meeting includes a request for up to $300,000 to do more detailed analysis of the site and design.

The current plan is projected to cost about $12.8 million and calls for renovating the older section of the town hall, which was built in 1857 and renovated in 1928. A 1987 annex to the building would be torn down and replaced with a new two-story addition.

The Town Hall Renovation Advisory Committee originally had asked Town Meeting to approve spending just over $1 million to produce final design documents; it is responding to push back from other local boards that wanted more analysis of the plan.

The town has been considering what to do about its town hall for about a decade, after studies showed the building was in serious disrepair, inefficient, and difficult to navigate.
