Norwell Town Meeting OK’s $15.2 million for new library

With 506 people voting in favor and 61 against, Norwell Town Meeting Dec. 4 overwhelmingly approved the money needed to build a new public library.

The town received a $6.4 million state grant in July toward the estimated $15.2 million total cost of the project.

The affirmative vote means Norwell taxpayers will come up with the remainder of the money needed to tear down the 40-year-old existing library and replace it with one almost three times its size.

As a result, officials said the owner of a home assessed at $600,000 would pay an average of $153 more annually in property taxes over 20 years.

In another matter, Town Meeting agreed to allow Kearsarge Solar LLC to make annual payments in lieu of taxes on an acre of solar panels over a parking lot on Longwater Drive.

The town’s Advisory Board said the measure was needed because state rules make it difficult for municipalities to tax solar power facilities.

The board said the agreement would provide the town payments and reduced energy costs worth about $800,000 over the next 20 years
