    Officials warn of phone ‘spoofing’

Duxbury town officials are warning residents to be wary of a telemarketing scam called phone “spoofing.”

The Police Department said it is investigating reports that people have received automated telephone calls in which the caller ID says “Town of Duxbury” but when they answer, it is a recorded sales message.

Officials urge residents to always be skeptical of incoming calls and to not rely on caller ID when trying to determine who is calling. They suggest residents let the call go to voicemail if they are unsure of the caller.

Town officials also posted information about phone spoofing and what to do about it on the town’s website, under “news.”
