Grant to aid Army Labs, town projects

Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray joined state and local officials Monday to announce a $1.5 million MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant to support the US Army Natick Soldier Systems Center and its host town. According to Murray’s office, the MassWorks grant follows a $1 million capital expenditure from the Patrick administration for Natick. The funding will pay for infrastructure improvements for the Natick Army Labs, as the facility is also known, and will make improvements to Kansas Street and Route 27 (North Main Street) that will allow for long-term planning and expansion of the research and development center, and will support upgrades to nearby Route 9 and Mass. Turnpike connections. The infrastructure improvements will also support the Paperboard Redevelopment Project, which will lead to the creation of 150 housing units at the former factory site. The recent grants are part of the second round of funding under the consolidated MassWorks program. The state has approved 26 grants totaling $38 million, after receiving 130 applications for more than $323 million in proposed infrastructure improvements.
