Councilors seek answers on poor plowing

City councilors are asking Mayor Jeannette McCarthy and public works director Michael Chiasson to appear before the council Tuesday night to explain the relatively poor plowing done after last weekend's snowstorm. Councilors decided at their meeting last week to also require Chiasson to look at the snow-clearing practices of nearby communities, and use that research to help improve Waltham’s performance. McCarthy said in a telephone interview that she wants to divide the city into quadrants, and to pay contracted snowplowers by the inches of snow they clear, rather than by the hour. The meeting will take place at 8 p.m. on the second floor of City Hall.
