School district studying finalists for top job

The school district’s Superintendent Search Committee has recommended three candidates to replace Bob Maguire, who is retiring in June. In a meeting with the School Committee, members of the search panel described how they pared down a list of 30 applicants to three finalists: Glenn Brand, the assistant superintendent in Sharon; Jeff Marsden, Wrentham’s superintendent; and John Phelan, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and personnel in Milton. Brand’s resume includes stints in the Dennis-Yarmouth, Needham, and Wareham school systems, while Marsden previously served in the Douglas and Taunton school districts, and Phelan worked in the Boston school system before shifting to Milton. Last week, all three candidates visited Medfield schools and had individual interviews with the School Committee. This week, teams composed of a School Committee member, a parent, a teacher, and a district administrator will visit each candidate’s home district and report back to the School Committee on their impressions. During its regular meeting Thursday, the School Committee will discuss the team reports and their own interview notes. The committee plans to name a new superintendent by April 8.
