Town lines up temporary office space

While the state attorney general’s office is reviewing a bylaw passed at the April 6 Town Meeting that would exempt several municipal buildings, notably Town Hall, from local zoning rules, officials say they’re hopeful of signing a lease for the Appleworks building, 325 Ayer Road, beginning in early August. All operations currently in Town Hall would be temporarily moved to the building while renovations are completed. Approval by the attorney general’s office, which routinely reviews new bylaws to ensure they pass legal muster, would pave the way for the long-delayed repairs to Town Hall, expected to cost more than $1 million. The Zoning Board of Appeals previously had denied variances for the work, citing the town’s land-setback rules.
