    Markey improves on statewide edge

    Local voters nearly mirrored the statewide results in the special election for US Senate, with almost 57 percent of the residents who cast a ballot Tuesday voting for US Representative Ed Markey to replace John Kerry. The Republican candidate, Gabriel Gomez, an investment banker and former Navy SEAL from Cohasset, received nearly 43 percent of the local vote. The election to replace John Kerry, who left the Senate to take over as the US secretary of state, drew 45 percent of Wellesley’s 16,157 registered voters, according to unofficial results from the town clerk’s office. Statewide, Markey finished with 55 percent, compared with 45 percent for Gomez.
