Framingham State’s Tom Kelley will coach North squad in D3 Senior Classic

Framingham State University football coach Tom Kelley will coach the North squad in the Division 3 Senior Classic, to be played in Salem, Va., on Dec. 13.

“I’m humbled and honored,” said the Milford resident, who has guided the Rams into the postseason for the last four years in a row while compiling a 35-10 record in that stretch.

This season, Framingham State (9-2 overall) won the inaugural MASCAC title with an 8-0 mark.

The Rams will have four players in the Senior Classic: running back Melikke Van Alstyne of Salem; linebacker Pat McGrath (Everett); offensive lineman Aaron Ferreira (Methuen); and defensive end Chevere Archer (Lynn).

The Rams’ assistant coaches joining Kelley on the sidelines will include son Patrick, 32.

“We’re also inviting the enemy,” said Kelley, jokingly, taking note of his other son, Michael, a 35-year-old assistant at Massachusetts Maritime.

In 2011, Framingham State wide receiver James McCarthy of Newton was the Senior Classic’s MVP. A defensive lineman for the Rams last fall, James Muirhead, played in the game and was later signed by the St. Louis Rams. He is now slated to play in the Arena League.

“There will be some pro scouts at the game,” said Kelley, also the athletic director at Framingham State. “This will be fun. We’ll see some of the best players in the country” from Division 3 programs.

The North and South squads will have a couple days of practice in Virginia.
