Fishing Derby to benefit resident with ALS

Outdoor enthusiasts looking to enjoy the ongoing winter season — and those just looking to support a good cause — are encouraged to sign up for the Matt Bruce Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday. The event is a fund-raiser organized by friends of Bruce, a 26-year-old resident recently diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Registration for the event begins at 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Lake Chauncy in Westborough, where the derby will take place, beginning at 8:30 a.m. There will be breakfast and coffee for sale, and lunch will be sponsored by Lowe’s Variety and Meat Shop as well as the Westboro House of Pizza. Registered participants will receive a registration number for a free lunch, T-shirt, and fishing bait at the event. Cost of registration is $50, all of which is a donation to benefit Bruce and his family with home care costs. Those interested can register on Facebook at the 1st Annual Matt Bruce Ice Fishing Derby page or e-mail family friend and organizer Ross Amato at rcapolo24@hotmail.com.
