Longtime officer to become Newton’s new police chief

Captain David MacDonald, a 20-year veteran of the Newton Police Department, will be named the new chief of the department Monday, effective at the end of this month when current Chief Howard Mintz retires, according to a press release from City Hall.

Mayor Setti Warren made the decision after an internal search was initiated several months ago as Mintz neared his 65th birthday, which is the mandatory retirement age.

MacDonald has spent the past two and half years working as the executive officer in Mintz’s office.
