The Discovery Museums in Acton have been selected as a recipient of the 2017 Commonwealth Award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The award, given out every two years, honors achievements in the arts, humanities, and sciences. The museums are being recognized in the access category for making their space more inclusive to older adults, people with disabilities, and other underserved populations. The award will be presented Feb. 15 at the State House.
A MassBay Community College student cyber security team placed fourth at the National Cyber League 2016 Competition. The participants from the Wellesley school were Paul Buonopane of Medfield , Andrew Liberatore of Franklin , David Dew of Wellesley, Chester Moses of Framingham , Timothy Ferguson of Marlborough , Corey Skinner of Clinton , and Fred Dolan of Newton . The competition occurs online, with students reacting as if their company were hacked. This is the second time a MassBay team competed.
The Newton Needham Regional Chamber will be hosting a slightly belated New Year's celebration at Mount Ida College in Newton. Members and non-members are welcome to attend the event to network. There will be hors d'oeuvres, live music, and a performance by Paulette's Ballet Studio dancers of Newton. Tickets are $50 for non-members and can be purchased online. The event is on Jan. 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The sale of dog licenses will begin Tuesday, Jan. 3 in Needham . Dogs older than six months must be licensed annually; the deadline is April 30. Licenses will be available in the Town Clerk's office. The fee is $20 for a spayed or neutered dog; $25 otherwise. Documentation of spaying and neutering is required for the discount. Renewing a current license can also be done online.
