Keeping with the pot spirit, the CCC announced the start of recreational sales — at 4:20 p.m.

Massachusetts waited with bated breath Friday to see if recreational marijuana sales would start before Thanksgiving after all.

And the good news for marijuana enthusiasts couldn’t have been delivered at a better time: 4:20 p.m.

A press release from the Cannabis Control Commission announcing the news was delivered to inboxes precisely at the time that has become a symbolic code for marijuana.

But it wasn’t on purpose, according to a spokesperson for the commission.

When asked on Twitter for an “official explanation,” Shaleen Title, a member of the commission, replied without words — just a smirking emoji.

With the press release came the news that so many across the state had been waiting for. Two medical marijuana dispensaries — Cultivate Holdings LLC in Leicester and New England Treatment Access LLC in Northampton — will open on Tuesday.
