Recreational marijuana store, state’s 10th, set to open in Gardner

The state’s 10th recreational marijuana shop is set to open Wednesday in Gardner, after cannabis company Sanctuary Medicinals received final approval from regulators.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission on Friday issued “commence operations” notices to the firm’s Gardner store, which is already open as a medical marijuana dispensary, and to its growing and processing center in Littleton. Both facilities had previously received provisional and final licenses from the agency after clearing a series of inspections.

“We’re very, very excited,” Sanctuary Medicinals chief executive Jason Sidman said. “We have a lot of product in stock, and we’re really going to be able to serve the adult-use [recreational] community without any hiccups in inventory or supply.”

In addition to its Gardner store, the company expects to open medical dispensaries this spring in Danvers and Woburn, which have banned recreational sales. Sidman said the company is also hoping to open a second recreational store this summer in Brookline’s Coolidge Corner neighborhood.

The Gardner store could have opened Tuesday, in accordance with a three-day waiting period imposed by the commission, but Sidman said the company decided to wait an additional day to coordinate logistics with local officials.

To avoid traffic problems, he said the Gardner store will initially operate on an appointment-only system and encourage customers to order ahead on its website. A police detail will also be on hand to direct customers to the shop’s 50 onsite parking spaces.

For now, the store will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, although it has local permission to stay open as late as 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Recreational marijuana sales in Massachusetts began Nov. 20, more than two years after voters backed a ballot measure legalizing the drug and setting up a system of regulated sales.
