Here’s what you need to know about shopping at Newton’s first recreational marijuana shop

Newton’s first recreational marijuana shop will open Saturday, giving Boston-area residents another option to take advantage of Massachusetts’ legal marijuana market.

Garden Remedies Inc. will operate on an appointment-only basis, as agreed upon in the company’s special permit from the Newton City Council. The company’s appointment system opens Wednesday.

The store received its “commence operations” notice from the Cannabis Control Commission on Tuesday, which gave it the ability to open after three calendar days.

“This is a big moment for everyone here at Garden Remedies, as the commencement of adult use sales will allow us to more fully realize our mission of helping as many people as possible by expanding access to safe, legal and natural cannabis products,” leaders at Garden Remedies wrote in a newsletter to adult-use customers Tuesday.

Garden Remedies’ CEO, Karen Munkacy, previously told the Globe that her battle against stage 3B breast cancer inspired her to open marijuana dispensaries — and make marijuana a legal and accessible option for pain relief.

“ ‘God, if you allow me to be cured, someday, I’m going to work to make this legally available to people,’ ” she recalled thinking at the time. “ ‘It’s ridiculous I have to suffer like this because my only other choice is to break the law.’ ”

She founded her company in 2013 and opened the medical dispensary in Newton in 2016. She also opened a medical marijuana dispensary in Melrose last year and has plans to open a dispensary in Marlborough.

Here’s what you need to know if you plan to shop at Garden Remedies in Newton:

Where is the store?

The store is located at 697 Washington St. in Newton.

What are the hours?

The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The store will be closed on Sundays.

Making an appointment

All customers are required to make an appointment on the company’s website or by calling the store at 844-344-2420 for a specific time slot.

Once an appointment is made, the customer will receive a confirmation text, which is needed to get inside the dispensary.

Medical patients also need to make appointments, but they will have their own online system, separate from adult-use customers.

Parking

Garden Remedies in Newton does not have a customer parking lot, so store leaders are recommending customers take public transportation if they can.

There are several bus lines that run through the area — though one does not run on weekends — and the Newtonville stop on the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line is just across the street from the store.

For those who need to drive to the store, there is limited metered parking available on Washington Street. There will be two spots reserved for ride-hailing vehicle drop-offs.

There’s also a bike rack on site for bicyclists.

Payment

Customers can pay using cash or a debit card. The store is using a cashless ATM system for debit cards.

There is also a traditional ATM at the store.

Purchasing limits

Garden Remedies does not plan to have any purchasing limits, beyond the state-mandated limits.
