GOP backs off bid to oust chairman

CHICAGO — The Illinois Republican Party’s central committee backed off an attempt to fire party chairman Pat Brady on Saturday, amid concern that ousting him because of his support for gay marriage could damage GOP efforts to appeal to more moderate voters. Brady became a target of some socially conservative members of the party when he spoke in favor of a bill to end Illinois’ ban on same-sex marriage. (AP)


5 children among 7 killed in house fire

GRAY — Two adults and five children died in a house fire Saturday in rural southeastern Kentucky, officials said. The name of the man, woman and children were not immediately released as offficials tried to confirm their identities. (AP)


Victim identified ­in boat race crash


LOS ANGELES — A sailor who died in a racing boat wreck off Southern California was identified Saturday as a 36-year-old San Diego man. Craig Thomas Williams was one of six people aboard a 32-foot sailboat that lost its steering and drifted into San Clemente Island. (AP)
