    Deputy kills self after taking hostage

    JIM THORPE — An off-duty deputy sheriff took another off-duty officer hostage at gunpoint, then fatally shot himself, State Police said Saturday. Investigators are trying to figure out what motivated Carbon County Deputy Sheriff David Midas, and they are looking to see if there were signs of mental illness. Police said that after Midas took the other officer hostage, a struggle began and Midas shot himself in the head. He died early Saturday at a hospital. (AP)


    Fire that killed 3 blamed on candles

    NEW YORK — Fire marshals said a kitchen fire at a Bronx apartment building that killed three young brothers was started by candles after electricity was cut because of unpaid bills. Fire officials said Friday’s fire started in a second-floor apartment of a six-story building a few blocks from Yankee Stadium. The boys ranged in age from 2 to 5. Their mother and two other children were in stable condition. (AP)

    Sharpton threatens Barneys boycott

    NEW YORK — Al Sharpton threatened Saturday to boycott Barneys if the luxury department store doesn’t respond adequately to allegations by black shoppers that they were racially profiled there. Two black customers, Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips, said last week that they were detained by police after making expensive purchases. (AP)
