Man turns 103, gets sign of LA love

LOS ANGELES — It’s not every day that someone turns 103, even in a city as big as Los Angeles.

So to recognize the birthday of Leon Saliba, city officials made an official street sign bearing his name.

Saliba was supposed to travel to 103rd Street in the city’s Watts neighborhood for a ceremony Thursday, but bad traffic gave his daughter pause.

So the city councilman representing Saliba’s neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley brought the street sign to his home. The sign has Saliba’s name printed in capital letters below “103rd Street.”

Saliba was all smiles, quipping, “I can’t take a sign I shouldn’t have.”

This is not the first year that his city councilman, Tom LaBonge, has honored Saliba.

Two years ago, LaBonge, an avid photographer, snapped Saliba standing near a sign for the US 101 freeway.

Last year, LaBonge photographed him standing outside Los Angeles fire station 102.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do for 104,” LaBonge said. “But I’ve got a year to figure it out.”
