President Trump wasted no time in mocking the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
Tom Perez, a former labor secretary in the Obama administration, was elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee on Saturday, beating out Congressman Keith Ellison at a party meeting in Atlanta.
A little more than an hour after that news broke, the president, who is no stranger to tweeting out criticism of his political adversaries, said in a tweet, “Congratulations to Thomas Perez, who has just been named Chairman of the DNC. I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party!”

Perez was quick to respond. In a tweet, he suggested that Trump shouldn’t be too pleased with the new DNC brass.
It wasn’t all Twitter mockery for Perez on Saturday. His fellow Democrats praised him.
Former president Barack Obama said in a statement that Perez will unite Democrats “under a banner of opportunity” and “lay the groundwork for a new generation of Democratic leadership for this big, bold, inclusive, dynamic America we love so much.”
Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh also offered congratulations.
“It is time now as [D]emocrats that we unite as a party and focus on the local races in our communities and the midterm elections in 2018,” the mayor said in a statement.
