Considered by many to be a hero, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche tried to intervene aboard a Portland, Ore., train when two teens were subjected to anti-Muslim abuse from Jeremy Joseph Christian. Police say Namkai Meche, 23, and Ricky John Best, 53, were both killed Friday by Christian.
Namkai Meche’s purported final words also come across as selfless.
“Tell everyone on this train I love them,” he reportedly told Rachel Macy, who tended to him while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Macy recounted the scene in an interview with The Oregonian, a Portland newspaper.
Christian, accused of killing both men, faces two counts of felony aggravated murder. He’s due in court Tuesday.
Macy said she saw Christian stab Namkai Meche in the neck. “It was just a swift, hard hit. It was a nightmare.”
Namkai Meche immediately was worried, she said. “I’m going to die,” he told Macy.
Macy and another man tended to Namkai Meche while paramedics were en route.
Macy told The Oregonian: “I just kept telling him, ‘You’re not alone. We’re here. What you did was total kindness. You’re such a beautiful man. I’m sorry the world is so cruel.’ ’’
