Does this name sound familiar?
George Papadopoulos is not only the name of a former Trump campaign aide who has pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents, but also a financial planner in Michigan — who is desperately trying to make clear that he is not that George Papadopoulos.
The apparent mixups came after news broke Monday afternoon that the former political aide Papadopoulos pleaded guilty on Oct. 5 of lying to FBI agents working for special counsel Robert Mueller about the nature of his interactions with ‘‘foreign nationals’’ who he thought had connections to Russian officials. The plea was unsealed Monday.
However, as the headlines skyrocketed around the web, a financial adviser based in Novi, Michigan, quickly took to his verified Twitter account to let the public know that, no, he has no political connections to the Trump campaign.
Although the Michigan-based Papadopoulos seemed to be having a hectic morning, he also kept a sense of humor about the whole ordeal, interacting with playfulness in responses to some Twitter users.
Many seemed to sympathize with the case of the mistaken identity.
Others — including Globe columnist Michael Cohen — seemed to empathize because they, too, had the same or similar monikers to those associated with the White House.
Some, including Papadopoulos himself, noted that this isn’t the first time his name has caused confusions: It’s also pronounced the same as a character on the TV show “Webster.”
According to Papadopoulos’ website, not only is he a financial planner, he also writes advice for a wealth management blog for The Wall Street Journal.
