You would think being British royalty would mean having to pull out all the stops for a marriage proposal.
Turns out, Prince Harry preferred a quiet night at home to pop the question to Meghan Markle.
In an interview with BBC on Monday, the newly engaged couple spoke about how they met — and also how Harry actually asked for Markle’s hand.
“It was just a standard, typical night for us,” Harry said.
“A cozy night,” Markle added. “What were we doing — just roasting chicken?”
“Trying to roast a chicken,” Harry interjected.
After a laugh, Markle added, “It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic.”
Markle said that Harry got down on one knee, and that she couldn’t wait to accept.
“I could barely let you finish proposing,” Markle said, turning to her fiance. “I said, ‘Can I say yes now?’”
“She didn’t even let me finish,” Harry confirmed. “She said, ‘Can I say yes? Can I say yes?’ And then there was hugs, and I had the ring in my finger, and I said, ‘Can I give you the ring?’ And she said, ‘Oh yes, the ring!’”
Harry designed the engagement ring himself, and features two diamonds from the collection of his late mother, Princess Diana, who died in 1997 when Harry was 12. Mounted on a band of gold, they flank a central diamond from Botswana — a country that holds significance to the couple.
Harry said that early on in their relationship, he persuaded Markle to come with him to Botswana.
“We camped out with each other, under the stars,” he told BBC. “She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic. So then, we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure we had a chance to get to know each other.”
The ring was made by Cleave and Company, the official jewelers to Queen Elizabeth II.
