Women’s March canceled over concerns it would be ‘overwhelmingly white’
WASHINGTON — A Women’s March group is canceling its January rally in Humboldt County, Calif., concerned participants would be ‘‘overwhelmingly white.’’
The Women’s March movement has unified millions in the past two years. But organizers of the Eureka Women’s March for Jan. 19 said their decision followed talks with activists. ‘‘Up to this point, the participants have been overwhelmingly white, lacking representation from several perspectives,’’ a Facebook statement read. ‘‘Instead of pushing forward with crucial voices absent, the organizing team will take time for more outreach.’’
Some objected. “What kind of crowd do they expect when you have 77.86% of the [county] population being White?’’ group member Terri Selfridge asked.
