With her hair tousled by wind, the woman posed like an experienced model wearing a silk, baby-blue dress made by a renowned Italian designer. She stood there on the deck of the Staten Island Ferry with a best-selling novelist, a fashion designer, and a noted artist and actress.
The woman in the baby-blue dress must also be famous? Perhaps she is also in films? Or maybe an author?
Meet Michelle Wu.
Yes, that was Boston’s first-term city councilor in a photo shoot splashed across the pages of the fashion magazine Elle. Wu was one of 35 famous women featured in the magazine’s 30th anniversary issue. The goal, per the magazine, was to assemble “the world’s most-accomplished 30-year-old women.”
Wu’s company included Taylor Schilling , the lead actress in “Orange is the New Black”; Lindsey Vonn , the Olympic skier; comedian Kate McKinnon of “Saturday Night Live”; and Elizabeth Holmes, whom the magazine described as the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire.
The photo shoot occurred in June, Wu said, and they took up to a half dozen trips back and forth on the ferry so the photographer could get the right shot. The article included a quote from Wu about balancing the birth of her first child with her career and pushing Boston to adopt paid parental leave for municipal employees.
“I wanted to be an example that women can balance work and motherhood,” Wu told the Globe. “It was definitely an experience that was different and unique and a little bit out of my comfort zone. But it was a lot of fun.”
