The raucous Republican presidential debate on Thursday night spawned many story lines, from Donald Trump’s comments on his hands (and other anatomy) to yoga breathing.
Another narrative that lit up social media: Ted Cruz’s lip.
A small white object appeared to shoot out of the senator’s mouth while he was speaking during the debate, and eventually transferred from his upper lip to his lower. The drama ended when Cruz apparently ate the unidentified object.
Many viewers even took to Google to ask what was going on during the debacle, according to The Washington Post, which monitored search trends during the debate.
And of course, many posted about the incident on Twitter, even leading to a parody account.
Here’s a closer look at the incident and social media reaction:

As someone who once went on Real Time With Bill Maher with a chunk of chap stick on my lip for an hour, I feel for Ted Cruz tonight.— Josh Barro (@jbarro) March 4, 2016
