Senator Ted Cruz said that Donald Trump asked him on Thursday to speak at the Republican convention later this month, and Cruz accepted.
A statement on a verified Twitter account run by Cruz staffers said that during the meeting, “Mr. Trump asked Sen. Cruz to speak at the Republican convention, and Sen. Cruz said he would be happy to do so.”
The statement also said that there “was no discussion of any endorsement.”
The move came as Trump held a tense meeting with Republican senators and sought to make peace with Cruz, his former rival for the presidential nomination, in a whirl through Washington intended to mend fissures within a Republican Party that remains deeply skeptical about his candidacy.
