Staff writer takes blame for Melania Trump’s controversial speech
An in-house staff writer for the Trump Organization says she is to blame for the similarities between Melania Trump’s Monday speech and Michelle Obama’s address in 2008.
In a statement released through the Trump campaign, Meredith McIver said the Republican nominee’s wife had read some passages over the phone from Obama’s speech as examples.
“I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. . . . This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant.”
Trump himself tweeted Wednesday that his wife’s speech “got more publicity than any in the history of politics,” taking an “all press is good press” approach.
McIver said she had offered her resignation to the Trumps, but they refused it.
