Comedian John Oliver offered some free psychoanalysis of Donald Trump as he addressed the Republican presidential nominee’s latest controversy.
Calling Trump a “self-serving half-man,” Oliver issued strong words Sunday night on his HBO show, “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” about the real estate mogul’s remarks on Thursday’s appearance of the parents of a US Muslim soldier who was killed in 2004.
Over the weekend, Trump attacked Khizr Khan’s speech at the convention and insinuated that his wife, Ghazala Khan, stood silent on the stage because her religion did not allow her to speak. Trump also attacked Khan for saying he does not understand what it means to sacrifice.
“I think I’ve made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. I’ve had tremendous success,” Trump said.
When pressed by ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos whether those are sacrifices, Trump responded yes, which angered Oliver.
“No! No, they are absolutely not! They are self-serving half-truths from a self-serving half-man,” Oliver said.
“Honestly, the main takeaway from these two weeks [of the conventions] is that incredibly, we may be on the brink of electing such a damaged, sociopathic narcissist that the simple presidential duty of comforting the families of fallen soldiers may actually be beyond his capabilities, and I genuinely did not think that that was a part of the job that someone could be bad at.”
