John McCain was Muslim-American soldier’s hero, father says

Senator John McCain of Arizona can usually count on the military and veterans community for supporters.

And one of them was Army Captain Humayun S. M. Khan.

Khan has become the center of a controversy during the 2016 election after his parents appeared at the Democratic National Convention Thursday to criticize Donald Trump.

His father, Khizr Khan, told CNN Tuesday that he and his son considered McCain a hero. Khan also said the last book his son had read was McCain’s book “Why Courage Matters: The Way to a Braver Life.”

McCain had issued a strong rebuke Monday of Trump’s criticisms of the Khans’ appearance at the Democratic convention, where Khizr Khan spoke emphatically against the Republican nominee while his wife, Ghazala Khan, silently stood by his side.

Trump has refused to endorse the senator from Arizona as well as House Speaker Paul Ryan in their re-election efforts.
