President Donald Trump slammed Democrats in a series of tweets on Thursday night, saying members of the opposition party “have lost their grip on reality.”

Trump’s tweetstorm came amid reports that then-senator Jeff Sessions met with Russia’s ambassador twice last year — something he did not disclose in his January confirmation hearing for attorney general. (On Thursday afternoon, Sessions announced that he would recuse himself from all investigations related to the Trump campaign, and insisted he thought his meetings with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak were not worthy of mention.)

In a series of four tweets Thursday night, Trump defended his attorney general.

“Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong,” Trump wrote. “He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional.”

Trump then went on to rail against Democrats, many of whom have called for the attorney general’s resignation. (Several top Republican lawmakers called on Sessions to recuse himself from any investigation into Russian meddling.)

“This whole narrative is a way of saving face for Democrats losing an election that everyone thought they were supposed to win. The Democrats are overplaying their hand. They lost the election, and now they have lost their grip on reality,” Trump tweeted. “The real story is all of the illegal leaks of classified and other information. It is a total ‘witch hunt!’”

Earlier on Thursday, Trump said he “wasn’t aware” about Sessions’ meetings with the Russian ambassador, and also said he had “total” confidence in his attorney general.
