Campaign behind him, Markey is well-positioned to deliver

Ed Markey’s ascension to the Senate, after 37 years in the House, was a businesslike transaction: Massachusetts needed a veteran to take the place of John Kerry, and Markey fit the bill. His victory was a choice of liberal over moderate, known over unknown, but also — and most crucially — proven advocate over charismatic newcomer who could promise everything but clout. That’s what Markey, a freshman senator on the cusp of his 67th birthday, must provide in order to validate the voters’ faith in him.

Marathon tragedy tempers campaigning

As the city embarks on the road to recovery, the US Senate hopefuls all agree campaigning in the final 10 days of the primary will need to be delicate.

“I don’t think there is anyone who would suggest that there is not some risk being a prosecutor,” said US Senate candidate Michael J. Sullivan.
