Making register of probate an appointed post is not the answer

RE “Register of probate’s woes show need to abolish post” (Editorial, Jan. 21): So, the problem is that electing registers of probate results in unqualified people getting the position and using it to appoint their friends to patronage jobs. And your solution is changing the job from elected to appointed?

Pardon my skepticism, but I think the only result would be one more patronage job, just appointed by someone higher up the food chain.
