letters | in (faint) praise of democracy

The many efforts of volunteers keep our system working

Farah Stockman says our system works because so many people believe it will, but this is only partly true. Our system works because so many people are willing to volunteer their time to make it work.

I was impressed when I went to my training to be on the Board of Bar Overseers, the group charged with judging lawyers who have been accused of malfeasance. Fifty people gave up hours of their time to limit corruption.

Thousands of citizens sit on boards and commissions. Democracy works because we participate and volunteer.
