Survival of Massachusetts military bases nothing to cheer in era of tight budgets

RE “A REPRIEVE for local military bases” (Page A1, Jan. 5):

The Globe reports on Congress giving a reprieve to Massachusetts military bases as though that were good news. More than 600 military bases throughout the world aren’t enough?

Interestingly, the account was next to an article about the dire need in Massachusetts for infrastructure repairs and funding to pay for them. A transfer of money set aside for the Pentagon to transportation would ensure the money would be much better spent.

It’s time the American people are given the choice for how their money is distributed. How about for peaceful purposes? The payoff will resonate here, there, and everywhere.
