With cuts looming, why doesn’t shadow of ax hover over lawmakers?

Federal budget sequestration has been defined as automatic, across-the-board spending cuts in the face of annual budget deficits.

Across-the-board apparently doesn’t apply to certain branches of the government.

With hundreds of thousands of government employees and those of key government contractors, especially in the defense industry, poised for the hardship of furloughs, income reduction, and lost jobs, why is it I hear nothing about Congress being subject to similar conditions?

Why is a do-nothing Congress immune from the policies its members afflict on hard-working Americans?
