No reason to turn up our noses at expired foods

Doug Rauch’s initiative to sell expired foods at bargain prices (“Putting expired foods to healthy use,” Page A1, Feb. 26) is commendable. Tara Agrawal (“Nutritional inequity should not be solved with castoffs,” Letters, March 1), who argued that we should not insult the poor in this way, should visit Haymarket, where produce, much of it expired food from supermarket shelves, is snapped up by swarms of bargain-hunters who appear neither insulted nor especially poor.

Passing a supermarket’s arbitrary expiration date doesn’t mean that produce is bad, and we all need good nutrition. So, let’s finish our vegetables.
