Same-sex couples’ role as adoptive parents needs to be free of bias

The Home for Little Wanderers applauds the American Academy of Pediatrics’ decision to publicly support gay marriage. In Dr. Claire McCarthy’s piece “Why backing same-sex marriage is good for children” (G section, March 25), she notes, “All children deserve to be raised in a secure stable family that can give them the love, nurturing, and resources they need. Marriage — not civil unions or something else shy of marriage — helps give children all those things.”

Same-sex couples often turn to adoption to raise a child. With roughly 400,000 children in the foster care system nationwide in need of secure, adoptive families, we cannot afford to discriminate against one’s marital rights based on sexual orientation.

Since there is no evidence to support the claim that it is detrimental for children to be raised by same-sex couples, it is crucial that children adopted by same-sex families be afforded the benefits associated with being raised in a family with married parents.
