What a child hears in lockdown

So many of us carried the intensity of last week’s events tightly controlled within ourselves, watching every moment as it played before us in various media. Trying to understand all of this blurred so much.

Yet our 11-year-old granddaughter, who was safe at home, in lockdown, surrounded herself with her classmates through Gmail chat. Her self-described chat status provided perspective that only the compromised innocence of a child could see so clearly: “I hear helicopters, sirens, the wind, and the birds.”
