WHILE GLOBE columnists seemed to enjoy describing Markey as a lackluster candidate (“Markey grinds it out,” Op-ed, June 26), there are strengths that Markey wasn’t able to reveal during the campaign which can now be valuable.
When I spoke to him at a campaign stop, I reminded him that getting rid of nuclear weapons wasn’t on his list of goals. We laughed. I took it as an acknowledgement of the obvious: No candidate today, especially one whose opponent was a member of the military, can be seen as soft on defense.
Markey has been a courageous fighter for ending the dangers, environmental impact, and expense of our nuclear weapons program since he was just starting out in Congress.
