William Bulger shouldn’t be lumped in with his brother

JEFF JACOBY is often off the mark, in my view, but his column on former Senate president William M. Bulger was downright shameful (“Political elite should shun Bill Bulger,” Op-ed, June 23).

If he really wants a clear picture of the Bulger brothers, within a comprehensive telling of Boston political, social, and criminal history, he should read the superb, balanced, carefully researched and elegantly written book by fellow Globe writers Kevin Cullen and Shelley Murphy.

One hopes Jacoby not only would spend some time looking into William Bulger’s accomplishments, but also into the difference between actively aiding and abetting, versus loving, one’s brother.
