Beware countries bearing gifts of freedom, democracy

In his column, H.D.S Greenway identified the devil’s advocate working at the heart of the American government’s seeking to involve us in other people’s civil wars (Op-ed, July 5). He is quite correct, but I would add that the same devil’s advocate is also responsible for suggesting to our government the justifications for all these war — namely, that we are involving ourselves to bring so-called freedom and democracy to the countries involved.

This fantasy has been disproved so many times that only the devil’s advocate could continue to put it forward. Obvious examples are Vietnam, Nicaragua, Iraq, and Afghanistan. All these were tragic and brutal interventions by our government, all for freedom and democracy.
