Agency must weigh kids’ protection against family cohesion

In the aftermath of a child-abuse tragedy, such as the recent death of a baby boy in Lynn who was left placed at home by the Department of Children and Families, it is tempting to demand that more children be placed in foster care for their own safety (“Patrick backs DCF after baby’s death,” Page A1, July 12). This response would create a different kind of tragedy that won’t make headlines — breaking up families who could stay together with sufficient support.

Balancing the mandates of child protection and family support is DCF’s constant challenge.
