How can you lead cheers for one effort, boo another?

So, the Globe would have us “embrace” the long-shot UMass effort to raise its status on the gridiron, at a cost of $9 million a year (“NCAA challenges UMass fans: Show you’re big-time worthy,” Editorial, Sept. 10), but when the president of Westfield State University spends a fraction of that amount to connect with foreign cultures and recruit foreign students, mostly through travel by other faculty and staff, your editorial tars him as a lavish spender (“Gourmet meals, just desserts,” Editorial, Sept. 5). Eh?
