Walsh’s labor ties a red flag on schools

RE MARY Battenfeld’s Oct. 19 letter (“Unimpressed with Connolly’s education message”):

I’m a lifelong union supporter, but will cast my vote for John Connolly for mayor. While his career in the classroom was relatively brief, Connolly has been focused on improving Boston’s public schools for his entire career. It is a disgrace that our tax dollars pay for the highest-cost system in Massachusetts, which nonetheless provides such poor outcomes for many children.

For some of these kids, public education is their best hope of escaping poverty, and we are failing them. The system needs to be reformed, and Marty Walsh will be too handcuffed by the teachers union to be successful.
