letters | Fontbonne Academy rescinds job offer to gay cook

End tax breaks for groups that violate basic norms of humane treatment

FONTBONNE ACADEMY’S rescinding Matthew Barrett’s job offer because he is married to a same-sex partner is a travesty. It violates human rights and flies in the face of humane and just same-sex marriage rights laws (“Bias alleged over same-sex marriage,” Page A1, Jan. 30).

The Catholic Church and its subsidiaries — schools, hospitals, and so on — receive immense tax benefits from the United States. If the Catholic Church wants to go on implementing out-of-date teachings and cruel treatment of fellow human beings, let us demand that it do so at the expense of any and all tax and other benefits it now receives from the American people.
