A cruel death, an uncaring response

THANK YOU to Michael Rezendes and The Boston Globe for the illuminating article on Joshua Messier (“A death in restraints under ‘standard procedure,’ ” Page A1, Feb. 16). It is heartbreaking that this young man, stricken with such a devastating brain disease as schizophrenia, spent his last minutes alive being tortured by the people entrusted with his care. Even worse, Attorney General Martha Coakley and officials at the Department of Correction at Bridgewater State Hospital have abdicated their responsibility to Messier by not holding anyone accountable for the acts of cruelty that caused his death. I would like to extend my support in any way I can to his family in pursuit of justice for this inhumane failure of the entire mental health system.
