Spirit of Harvard Square would suffer under glass enclosure

Some wonder whether the changes Harvard University proposed for Forbes Plaza would affect the culture of Harvard Square (“Clash of visions in the square,” Page A1, Aug. 28). In short, the outdoor plaza by Au Bon Pain would be covered by a glass edifice. Of course it would affect the culture of the place.

Harvard Square is more than just a home for Harvard. The outdoor plaza is a place where free spirits, musicians, poseurs, poets, chess players, winners, losers, the professor and the panhandler are out in the open, sitting on the chairs outside. I wrote two books of poetry there.

This space has always been an inspiration. Now all that community would be housed in glass, like a specimen for an all-encroaching Harvard University.

I think the spirit of the streets would greatly suffer.
